Review of Hollow Fiber (HF) Membrane Filtration Technology for the Treatment of Oily Wastewater: Applications and Challenges

Oily wastewater has been recognized as a threat to the environment due its hazardous nature and it can negatively affect ecosystem, threaten wildlife human health. Physical, chemical, biological technologies demonstrated mixed performance in oily treatment, and, therefore, proper treatment technology for needs be addressed. Membrane filtration using hollow fiber (HF) membrane is promising alternative remove emulsified oil from wastewater. This review discusses different sources of wastewater, various methods, technology. The assessment focused on parameters affecting HF applications membrane-based treat paper reveals that systems have previously used bench-scale studies few pilot-scale applications, which proved favorable recalcitrant containing high salinity. Limitations associated with fouling reduction permeability lifespan tackled alleviated through modifying chemistry adjusting operational parameters. compilation showed low food/microorganism (F/M) ratio, long solid retention time (SRT) sludge age, hydraulic (HRT), moderate aeration were preferred when treating Based this review, future should focus optimizing hydrodynamic conditions system, commercialization modified membranes, utilization green construction broaden applications.
